Hurricane Gustav Nears Haiti; Cuba, Gulf Could Be Next Stop
Hurricane Gustav, the second hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season, is continuing to strengthen as it approaches the south coast of Haiti. It will produce heavy rain and deadly floods and mudslides over the next few days over Hispaniola before it makes its way towards Cuba, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. Although it is too early to tell if it will affect the U.S., there is a growing concern that this hurricane could become a major, 111-plus mph hurricane over the next several days as it moves toward Cuba and possibly into the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Residents living along the Gulf Coast from Texas to Florida should watch the track of Gustav closely.Hurricane Warnings are in effect across southern and western Haiti, southern Dominican Republic and eastern Cuba. Hurricane Watches are in effect for the northern coasts of Hispaniola and across northeast Cuba and Jamaica. This hurricane is bringing tremendous wind-driven heavy rain and likely deadly flooding and mudslides to Haiti and the Dominican Republic today into Tuesday. The hurricane`s heavy rain bands will expand into eastern Cuba and Jamaica throughout the day. Haiti and the Dominican Republic were hit by Tropical Storm Fay just over a week ago and several dozen deaths were reported from flooding and mudslides. A similar scenario is possible today as up to a foot of rain falls over the island nations. WeatherBug Meteorologist Rachel Peterson has the latest in this exclusive WeatherBug Tropical Weather Outlook. As of 11 a.m. EDT, Gustav is centered near 17.9 N, 72.4 W or about 50 miles south-south of Port Au Prince, Haiti and about 240 miles southeast of Guantanamo, Cuba. This places it about 730 miles southeast of Miami.Estimated maximum sustained wind speeds have increased to 90 mph this morning, bringing Gustav to hurricane strength. Additional strengthening is likely today, and it could become a Category 2 storm before it makes landfall on Haiti this afternoon. The central pressure is estimated to be 981 mb or 28.97 inches. It is moving to the northwest at 9 mph.Computer model forecast guidance generally takes the storm northwestward over Haiti and then west-northwest towards Cuba and than into the extreme southeast Gulf of Mexico. It could grow into a major Category 3 hurricane with winds of at least 111 mph as it moves away from Haiti and heads toward southeastern Cuba. By the end of weekend, it may moves across western Cuba and into the Gulf of Mexico. Although there is still a large amount of uncertainty, there is potential that this hurricane could move into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. Residents of all of the U.S. Gulf Coast will need to watch this systems progress over the weekend and into the early half of next week. WeatherBug meteorologists will continue to track this disturbance, so keep checking back for additional updates throughout the week. What do you think of this story?
