The seaport town Harlingen is enclosed by the sea for 70 per cent. The heart of maritime life is still beating here. Shipping, trade and industry have always been important for Harlingen. Harlingen's bloom - from the Spanish era until the French era - had made the city centre a massive touristic attraction. In that, the Noorderhaven, the Vijverbuurt and the Zoutsloot are all showpieces. The town hall with its council house tower, the restored step-roofed warehouses all show Harlingen from its best side. At the Voorstraat, Museum het Hannemahuis is situated; among other things you will find a nice collection of Jugendstil-tile tableaus here, once produced by the old Tile Works Van Hulst. Today pottery is still produced according to traditional methods. The Harlinger Earthenware and Tile Works still shows some beautiful examples. A bycicle- or cartrip through the area that produced the clay for this earthenware , shows the 'lytse bouhoeke' (the area between Harlingen, Bolsward and Franeker) at its best. Almenum The name of the Harlinger city lodging house is derived from the village of 'Almenum', which was founded about 770 A.D. by the missionary Gustavus Forteman. According to a Frisian legend a red banner working miracles was walled in the church of Almenum. Whether this is true or not, the 12th Century St.-Michaelsdome was enclosed within the walls of Harlingen about the year 1575 and replaced by a new church. Near the reformed church - in the heart of the former village of Almenum - is the city lodging house. City lodging house 'Almenum' is an excellent base of operation for a trip to the unfamiliar hinterland and to the Waddenkust. The monumental and cosy city centre of Harlingen, the interesting museums and the lively seaport are all at walking distance.

Stadslogement 'Almenum' The city lodging house is situated in a 17th century warehouse and in the neighbouring 19th century working-class houses. City lodging house 'Almenum' comprises 10 appartments, all for a maximum of 4 persons, all grouped round a cheerful inner court yard. During the restoring of the monumental buildings the choice was made to keep the century old walls as close as possible to its original state. To this effect, the lodging houses were built on their own foundation and free from the old city walls. Route Description If you are coming out of the direction of Amsterdam/Afsluitdijk: take exit Harlingen. Keep following the signs with 'Centrum' on it until you find the station at your left hand. Opposite the station, take the righthand street (Zuid-Oost Singel) with water on the left side of the road. At the very end of this road you will arrive at a T-junction. Turn left and pass a little old bridge. At the end of the bridge immediately turn left, then right, left again, and then turn right again. Drive straight ahead for about 150 meters, until you find 'Het Stadslogement' on your left hand. At the right side of the road you can park your car. If you are coming out of the direction of Leeuwarden: take exit Harlingen. This is the Kanaalweg with water on your righthand side. Keep following this road for about 1 kilometer, until you pass a little old bridge. On passing the brigde immediately turn left, then right, left again, and then turn right again. Drive straight ahead for about 150 meters, until you find 'Het Stadslogement' on your left hand. At the right side of the road you can park your car. |
