Piazza del Campo, whose current configuration is that of the 1300s, is theatre of the famous Palio (horse race) which takes place twice a year, in July and in August. The most important Palazzo, which faces onto the Piazza del Campo, is the Palazzo Pubblico, Municipal Seat; on its left side the Torre del Mangia, symbol of the municipal authority, was abutted around 1340. The Palazzo Pubblico hosts the Civic Museum, which boasts precious frescoes and paintings on wood by famous artists from 1300 to 1500. The famous Accademia Musicale Chigiana, founded by Count Guido Saracini in 1932 with the aim of organizing Master Classes for the principal musical instruments, carries out its activities in one of the finest building in Siena, rich in its splendid art collection, the Chigi Saracini Collection. Not far away from the Accademia Chigiana, is the National Picture Gallery, formed by an outstanding collection which comprises all the Siena art. The Cathedral dell’Assunta, in Romanic-Gothic style, was constructed between the XII and XIII centuries. The structure of the Cathedral is not perfect as the initial project had numerous interruptions but, however, it is considered to be one of the most beautiful Medieval churches in Italy. Beneath the cathedral apse is the Battistero, built in XIV century, enriched by the “Crypt of the Statues” and the most ancient paintings on wall by artists from 1270 to 1280. The Museum of Cathedral Works, constructed in 1870, hosts many masterpieces of various artists, among which stands out the “Maestà” by Duccio da Buoninsegna. The Santa Caterina Church in Fontebranda, with single-nave interior, was built in 1400 and it is frescoed with the story of the Saint. The Santuario Cateriniano, close to the church, hosts paintings which cover the life of the Saint and some of her personal objects. The Basilica of S.Domenico, started in 1226, is an imposing and severe construction in Gothic-Cistercense style. It is dominated by an elegant crenelated bell tower. The Egyptian cross, single-nave interior is rich with paintings about the life of Saint Caterina. The S.Francesco church was constructed in 1326, enlarging an already existing little church; it has the interior at Egyptian cross, single nave, and preserves precious frescoes and other works of art. |
