Lying 48km east of Xánthi along the direct road skirting the Rodhópi foothills, KOMOTINÍ is larger and markedly more Turkish than Xánthi. On first impression, it's a rather charmless place, with ranks of apartment buildings and gridded suburbs to the south and west, their noisy streets clogged with traffic.
