Live Google Maps Violence Against Pro-Democracy Protests in Libya

Monday, February 21st, 2011

An Iran Google Maps user is creating an up-to-date interactive Google map layer that outlines the locations and details surrounding the recent protests in and around Libya.

Google Map Users interested in the current Libya pro-democracy troubles are able to visit the Google Map app and view icons on the Libya Google map packed with statistics and reports of protests, police violence and death tolls that are curently happening in Libya

The Libya  pro-democracy Google map’s creator is known only by his username (@Arasmus), but appears to be working out of Tehran (Iran), where he has been helped to keep the Libya Google map updated through “compiling reports from trusted accounts on Twitter.”

On his introduction for the up-to-date interactive Google map layer map, he requested contributors to provide more reports (and in more detail) to turn this into a comprehensive layer, stating in a message: “Because of the difficulty in properly translating Arabic names into English, reports including latitude and longitude data are preferred.”

The Libya protests are the latest in a line of citizen’s efforts to upheave national establishments in North Africa and the Middle East, with the likes of Libya and Bahrain inspired by the successes of Tunisia and Egypt in removing their respective dictators and bringing democracy to their nations.
